Nestled in the serene village of Šmarje, at the heart of Slovenian Istria, Santomas embodies centuries of winemaking tradition combined with modern innovation. Led by Ludvik Nazarij Glavina, a fourth-generation winemaker, Santomas is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region.
With 25 hectares of vineyards and 7 hectares of olive groves, the estate thrives on sustainable farming, producing premium wines and olive oil that reflect the unique terroir of Istria.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Santomas story began with Ludvik’s ancestors, who cultivated grapes and olives as early as the 19th century. Today, the winery is renowned for its dedication to native grape varieties such as Refošk (Refosco) and Malvazija (Malvasia), which capture the spirit of the Mediterranean. Each vintage tells a story of craftsmanship, care, and respect for the environment, supported by Santomas’ commitment to organic and biodynamic practices.
Wines with Character
From the youthful vibrancy of Refošk and Malvazija to the complexity of aged red blends like the Grande Cuvée, Santomas offers a range of wines to suit every palate. Whether it’s the fresh, aromatic profile of their white-label wines or the bold elegance of their Antonius vintage collection, every bottle showcases the unique microclimates and flysch soil of Slovenian Istria.
Where Tradition Meets Innovation
Collaborating with French enologist Claude Gross and chief enologist Uroš Bolčina, Santomas bridges time-honored traditions with cutting-edge winemaking techniques. The result is a portfolio of wines that honors the past while embracing the future, offering wine lovers a taste of Slovenian Istria like no other.
